There’s nothing quite like the energy at the Credit Union Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC)—and this year’s event didn’t disappoint. Now, in my seventh year of attending, I found GAC 2025 to be a powerful convergence of advocacy, innovation, and collaboration. As the industry’s largest annual gathering, it brought together credit unions, fintechs, and thought leaders all focused on one goal: shaping the future of financial services.
Innovation and Member Experience Take Center Stage
The vendor hall buzzed with meaningful conversations—whether with credit union leaders, fellow partners, or innovative fintechs. We heard firsthand what’s top of mind for institutions across the country. A few key themes consistently surfaced: the growing pressure to modernize core and digital banking platforms, the strategic role of fintech partnerships, and the persistent need to navigate an increasingly complex regulatory environment.
Once again, technology took center stage. Conversations focused on how credit unions can better leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics to elevate the member experience. It’s also clear that personalization and operational efficiency are no longer optional; they’re essential to compete in today’s financial landscape.
Regulation, Risk, and Readiness
Although I couldn’t attend sessions directly due to our exhibitor role, I closely followed coverage from industry media and conversations with peers. Two key takeaways were “embrace the chaos” and the continued emphasis on regulatory preparedness. NCUA leadership and policymakers highlighted sustainable growth, risk management, and compliance readiness as key priorities. These are critical considerations for credit unions as they refine strategies and evaluate technology partners.
Another area of focus continues to be third-party risk management, particularly as fintech collaboration becomes more widespread. As credit unions pursue innovative partnerships, strong governance and oversight frameworks must support those relationships.
Advocacy and the Credit Union Mission
Legislative advocacy was another foundational aspect of GAC 2025. Conversations centered around protecting the tax-exempt status of credit unions, advocating for fair and appropriate data privacy regulation, and expanding access to financial services in underserved areas. These efforts reflect the credit union commitment to community, equity, and long-term financial well-being.
It was incredibly encouraging to see how engaged attendees were in these discussions. From policy to innovation, it’s clear that credit union leaders are invested in not just keeping up with change but driving it.
Continuing the Conversation
I was also privileged with the opportunity to sit down with Credit Union Connection while attending GAC 2025 to discuss the current trend of credit union mergers and the continued challenges of implementing AI and meeting compliance standards. Hear more from our full conversation here.
