Microsoft Systems Engineer III – Farmington Hills, MI

POSITION LOCATION

This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Currently 5 days of on-site work per month are required. 

POSITION PURPOSE

The Microsoft Systems Engineer III is focused on systems and server architecture, engineering and administration, with the aim of providing a stable, scalable environment and maximizing availability of systems infrastructure.

This position is the highest escalation point within the Microsoft Engineering group and will be responsible for handling escalations from less-experienced staff, internal staff, and clients. Furthermore, the Microsoft Systems Engineer III will provide training and guidance to the other team members. This is not a management position, but the incumbent from time to time will be expected to provide leadership on projects and day-to-day team happenings.

The incumbent will work with other Technical Operations staff to respond to systems- and server-related escalations, requests, and projects. The incumbent will also adopt and foster a team approach to problem-solving, while interfacing with internal customers and external vendors to ensure efficient delivery of MDT’s services.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES      

  • Maintains, builds, and supports the infrastructure.
  • Standardizes and automates processes and monitors using scripting technology.
  • Suggests and oversees improvements to the infrastructure.
  • Continual maintenance of security, including backup and redundancy strategies.
  • Diagnoses and resolves system, database, and application problems.
  • Ensures system security and proper backup and recovery.
  • Liaises with 3rd-party vendors, IT providers, etc. for support where required.
  • Monitors Company systems and provides detailed reports.
  • Diagnoses and resolves system and connectivity problems.
  • Ensures system security and proper backup and recovery.
  • Provides effective system protection.
  • Tests and evaluates software and hardware for reliability and functionality.
  • Procures and implements new software and hardware systems.
  • Develops processes to improve system reliability and proposes solutions to meet the future needs of both the Company and clients.
  • Evaluates and recommends standards for hardware and software operations in all Company systems.  Assists in locating and implementing new products as needs arise. 
  • Provides suggestions in the development of IT strategies and policies.
  • Tracks and resolves customer problems promptly and effectively.
  • Ensures that all systems support customer needs.
  • Obtains and conveys information as needed.
  • Promotes goodwill and a positive image of the Company.
  • Provides occasional leadership on projects and day-to-day team happenings.
  • Assists personnel in other departments to increase understanding of system operations and effectively integrate new technology.
  • Keeps management well informed of area activities and any significant problems.
  • Ensures that reports are completed accurately and timely.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Ensures that work area is clean, secure, and well maintained.
  • Performs miscellaneous projects as assigned.
  • Updates technical skills as required.
  • Assesses disaster situations, threats, and risks and identifies primary areas of vulnerability.
  • Research recovery methods and recommends appropriate solutions for data storage, backup, and retrieval.
  • Ensures appropriate mechanisms are in place to protect network connections and servers. Establishes backup power sources.
  • Develops system recovery and relocation plans as well as replacement options.
  • Works with disaster recovery committee to develop a thorough IT disaster recovery plan.  Makes necessary changes to the plan as business environment changes or new risks develop.
  • Annually reviews all aspects of the IT disaster recovery plan.  Makes adjustments as necessary.
  • Develops and implements IT disaster recovery training for company personnel.
  • Updates the written disaster recovery plan as necessary.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Two years of additional college computer training, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience required.
  • MCSE and VCP certifications considered an asset.
  • 5+ years of experience working in Microsoft-based environments.
  • 3+ years of experience working in a service provider or financial services environment (i.e., credit union).
  • 5+ years of experience working with VMWare virtualization technologies
  • 5+ years of experience working with on-premises Microsoft Exchange, Office 365 and spam filtering (Mimecast preferred) technologies.
  • 3+ years of experience in a SQL environment.
  • 3+ years of experience with scription and automation tools.
  • 3+ years of experiencing working with network monitoring solutions (i.e., Solarwinds).
  • Prior experience with Jack Henry suite of applications considered an asset.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of data center operations and support.
  • 5+ years supporting large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • 5+ years of experience within a Directory Service stack (Active Directory, WINS, LDAP, DNS, GPO, AD Federation, SAML, ADFS, Multi Factor, Azure AD connect, etc.).
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft server operating systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of High Availability, disaster recovery, business continuity, data management, capacity management, and Application Service Resiliency.
  • Advanced knowledge of managed services & multi-tenant support environments.

Special

  • No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions (such as in a typical office).
  • Additional hours, including Saturday/Sunday support, as required.
  • Occasional overnight travel for business purposes.
  • Long duration of computer workstation usage.
  • When designated primary or secondary in on-call rotation, available 24/7 via phone or pager.
